DTU Bioengineering at Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Postdoc in Natural Product Chemistry in marine fermented products.

The overall mission of DTU Bioengineering is to contribute to research, development and education within the scientific areas of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biomedicine and Systems Biology. In particular, this position is placed in the Section of Synthetic Biology and aims at strengthening our activities within photosynthetic cell factories.

The aim of this research is to develop much-needed and innovative anti-parasitic treatments for pigs (and potentially other livestock) from industrial by-products. The Post doc position is part of a project called SEAPAR, funded by the GUDP program in Denmark. The postdoc will work with the identification and structure elucidation of the bioactive compounds produced during the fermentation process and screened by partners in the project. SEAPAR will utilize by-products from processing and/or fermentation of seaweed.

Responsibilities and tasks
The postdoc will be placed in the research group Photosynthetic Cell Factories, in the Synthetic Biology group. The postdoc will, as part of the SEAPAR project be responsible for the isolation of bioactive compounds from fermented seaweed. The position also includes setting up HPLC-MS methods that will enable the partners of SEAPAR to have a fast chemical analysis of the many samples that will be produced during the project.

The chemical work will be performed in collaboration with the members of DTU Metabolomics Core, where the postdoc will have access to state-of-the analytical chemistry equipment e.g.:

Are you interested in Natural production chemistry, then you could be our now postdoc. Your core responsibilities will be to

  • Isolate bioactive metabolites
  • Setup and establish LC-MS methods

The research will contribute to all parts of the SEAPAR project, and you should have the ability to collaborate with colleagues from as device fields as farming, veterinary sciences and fermentation specialist. You must an ability to motivate colleagues to be at their best and achieve our ambitious goals through strong collaboration.

The project is performed in collaboration with: DTU Metabolomics Core; Veterinary Parasitology, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, University of Copenhagen; Nordisk Tang ApS; Fermentation Experts AS, and Rønbækgård Pig Farm. The project is coordinated from University of Copenhagen, and a PhD student will be employed there with whom many of the samples will be screened for anti-parasitological activity.

We require the following:

  • Candidates should have a PhD degree in natural product chemistry or similar.
  • Strong experience with isolation of natural products
  • Profound experience with LC-MS method development and general analytical chemistry skill.
  • Experience with isolation of natural products from seaweed and/or fermentation products will be preferred
  • Several first-author papers in good international journals.
