The Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (DTU Bioengineering) addresses challenges of societal and scientific importance through basic and applied research, teaching, scientific consulting and dissemination of knowledge within the areas of microbiology, biomedicine and biotechnology.
The department’s research lies within the areas of biochemistry; biophysics; molecular, structural, and cellular biology; enzymology; immunology; microbial ecology and physiology; natural product chemistry; modelling nanotechnology and bioinformatics.
The department mission is, based on a fundamental and technological understanding of biological and molecular systems, to provide research, innovation, education, scientific services, and dissemination of knowledge in the areas biotechnology and biomedicine.
The department vision is, as an international leader in research, education, and innovation in biotechnology and biomedicine, to advance the state-of-the-art in sustainable bioprocesses and contribute to the improvement of human health.
A key focus of the department is the engineering approach to all aspects of biotechnology and biomedicine. This positions the department as a valuable player with unique competences in a growing biobased economy and with health systems transforming towards personalized medicine.
The teaching at the department is anchored in the department’s research at both bachelor, master, and PhD level, thereby ensuring that the students are taught using the newest knowledge within the area.
The department activities put a clear focus on the needs requested by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and point towards innovations, new businesses and scientific services within bioremediation, ingredients, material science, biopharmaceuticals, and possibly also bioenergy for the benefit of society. The activities at the department also support many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The department has approximately 400 employees of which 2/3 are scientific staff. The research at the department is organized in four sections. The research platforms are also organized in the sections but service the entire department as well as external partners and customers.
The department teaching unit “Teaching Core” coordinates and develop the teaching at the department.
The Administrative and Service Unit support the scientific staff and ensure that administrative processes run smoothly.
The department is headed by the Head of Department and his Leader Team which consists of the Section Heads, the Head of Administration, and The Head of Teaching. The Head of Department is advised by an external Advisory Board, a Strategic Faculty Forum, a Liaison Committee, and a Work Environment Committee.
