Invitation

Inaugural lecture - Winnie E. Svendsen

Winnie E. Svendsen has recently been appointed Professor in Innovation and Integrated Micro- and Nano Technological Systems at DTU Bioengineering. I would therefore like to invite you to celebrate the appointment with an inaugural lecture by Winnie E. Svendsen on

Nano Bio Integrated Systems

The lecture is followed by a reception. Registration is not necessary.

Abstract:

In the last century it became possible to visualize and manipulate matter on the nanoscale. This has led to groundbreaking research and has exposed new possibilities across all scientific disciplines, whose impact we already now experience in our everyday lives. Early on in this scientific revolution, the immense impact of probing biology on the nanoscale was recognized. Adapting micro- and nanotechnology for biological science enables new biological insights and creates innovative solutions for bioanalysis in numerous areas for example in medical diagnostics and monitoring.

This talk will reveal the unique possibilities of using micro- and nanotechnology for biological applications, such as novel methods for mapping the physical properties of cellular structures, total analysis systems for automating chromosome analysis, improved cell and tissue culturing methods with integrated sensing, type differentiation of bacteria, and study of the viability of bacteria subjected to different hazardous environments.

Prof. Winnie E. Svendsen will give an overview of her research journey from atomic and nuclear physics to probing and manipulating biology using micro- and nanotechnology. A trip spanning from fundamental research across applied research to innovation and entrepreneurship. Today, she is exploring the possibility of integrating the technology in small compact systems, enabling so-called point-of-use platforms, so the analysis can be conducted in the field, such as hospitals, water facilities or crop farms.
