DTU Bioengineering invites applications for a position as assistant professor within Structural Enzymology and Biorefining. The position is within DTU’s strategy on enzyme technology and specifically targets structural enzymology and the study of biorefinery reactions. The assistant professorship is placed in the section of Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology at DTU Bioengineering and is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

In the
Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology section we perform impactful and innovative research aiming at harnessing the biotechnological potential of proteins in food and biomaterials, enzymatic biomass-processing, and interplay of diet, host and gut microbiota. We employ tools within protein structure, function, engineering and molecular interactions analyses as well as proteomics, genomics and bioinformatics. The section teaches bachelor and master students in biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology and protein and enzyme chemistry. The section has extensive international and national collaborations with top academic institutions as well as industrial partners.

The assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position includes responsibilities related to the department’s externally financed projects within enzymatic processing of complex biomass, currently including different types of heterogeneous polysaccharide substrates, agroindustrial residue streams, and protein-rich biomass across several ongoing research projects. Main tasks include advanced structural analyses and protein engineering of enzymes to understand and improve enzyme function within the above research project activities. The successful candidate must engage proactively in the section’s enzymatic bioprocess research, and in the supervision of PhD students and project students within enzyme discovery and enzyme-structure function research subjects. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to develop externally funded research projects, and lead own research proposals and projects. The position also includes teaching obligations, including supervision of BSc and MSc projects, and we expect that the candidate has or will take the Teaching and Learning course (UDTU) at DTU Learning Lab within the first year of the employment.

Candidates must

  • Hold a PhD degree or equivalent and academic qualifications and research experience equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Assistant Professor, Researcher, or Postdoc.

The candidate should also have:

  • “Hands-on” experience with enzyme cloning, expression, and engineering, in particular with respect to (microbial) enzymes working on complex carbohydrates.
  • Experience with bioinformatics and genome mining in relation to enzyme discovery.
  • Documented research experience with protein crystallography and structural enzyme analyses, especially of carbohydrate carbohydrate-active enzymes and carbohydrate-binding modules
  • Documented research experience within enzyme characterization and enzyme kinetics (enzyme assays, productivity terms, extended reactions) and assessment of enzymes for complex carbohydrate biorefining.
  • International and industrial collaboration experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Danish.
  • Teaching experience and course management.

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • Societal impact of research (notably relevance to the UN sustainability goals)
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International experience
  • Internal and external collaboration
  • Communication skills
Consideration will also be given to:
  • Experience, i.e. experimental research experience and relevance of the research background
  • Research level (impact and quality of publications)
  • PhD supervision experience (co-supervision)
  • Innovation activities, including collaboration with industry
