at the Center for Microbial Secondary Metabolites, CeMiSt

The research area of this position is within microbial natural product chemistry with focus on analysis of the interaction between secondary metabolite producing microorganisms.

We are looking for an ambitious chemist with broad experience in natural product chemistry. In this position you will get a unique possibility to work on advanced analytical natural product chemistry focusing on detecting microbial secondary metabolites of marine and soil bacteria and terrestrial fungi and determining how they affect microbial diversity and functionality in both natural and engineered systems, among others by analysis using state-of-the-art MS based imaging techniques. 

You will be collaborating with scientists working on microbial ecology, on bioinformatics and on molecular microbiology on several topics:

  • Development of separation methods and MS based imaging techniques to characterize the microbial secondary metabolites
  • Identification, purification and quantification of microbial small molecules, using HPLC-HRMS and NMR
  • Compound identification using software and databases, such as MSDial, MZmine, AntiBase and web-based MS-MS databases
  • Experience with python and/or R
  • In depth knowledge of LCMS based metabolomics including experimental design and multivariate analyses
  • Fluent in English 

To qualify for this position you should have several of the following qualifications:

  • Development of separation methods to characterize the microbial secondary metabolites
  • A strong background and solid research experience in analytical chemistry or natural product chemistry
  • Solid hands-on experience in LC-MS
  • Highly motivated by microbial natural products
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Excellent track-record of scientific achievements (publications, patents, awards, grants, conference presentations, etc.)
  • Hard working and dedicated to his/her work
  • Team player with a desire to help her/his colleagues to succeed and a good sense of humor

You must be ambitious, well organized, structured and enjoy interacting with many different people including PhD students and postdocs. Also, a good sense of humor will be appreciated.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The period of employment is for 2½ year with starting date as soon as possible.

The Center for Microbial Secondary Metabolites is a Center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The Center started 1st of January 2018 and will run for six years with an option for a four years extension. The Center is based at the Technical University of Denmark and hosted by Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (DTU Bioengineering), and is led by Professor Lone Gram. Three DTU departments and 10 senior faculty participate in the Center, and 15 PhD students and postdocs are currently hired by CeMiSt.
