DTU Bioengineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Fermentation Specialist.

This position will be placed at the DTU Fermentation core / Yeast Biotechnology and Fermentation research group, both part of DTU Bioengineering, Section of Synthetic Biology. The section’s work focuses on gene and genome editing, synthetic biology, regulation engineering, protein production, discovery and production of bioactive compounds across different cell factory types, in particular yeast, filamentous fungi and plant cells.

The job
You will be responsible for supporting the fermentation core manager (Associate Prof. José Luis Martinez Ruiz) with the day-to-day operations and management of the DTU Fermentation core. You will take responsibility for keeping the core facilities’ fermentation and high-throughput equipment operational, and further help coordinate the activities of the platform-associated technicians', ensuring continuous smooth operations. The core facility serves both internal DTU projects and external customers, and part of your job will be to manage agreements, provide scientific consulting / experimental design / analysis to customers, and act as a project manager ensuring timely delivery of services and completion of projects.

You will also be significantly involved with teaching at the Fermentation technology-related courses taught by DTU Bioengineering, as well as in co-supervision of project students (PhD/MSc/BSc), and actively participate in the research activities carried out by the Yeast Biotechnology and Fermentation group.

Our expectations of you
Candidates should have an MSc (preferably a PhD) degree in biology, biotechnology or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level.

Our ideal candidate has most of the following skills:

  • Microbial physiology and molecular biology of yeast (previous experience with non-conventional yeast is a plus) and filamentous fungi.
  • State-of-the-art molecular cloning techniques applied to metabolic engineering and strain design.
  • Quantitative fungal physiology and fermentation technology.
  • Experience with HT-robotics and automation (micro-fermentation systems, BioLector, ROTOR, Ambr250, or the like).
  • A proven solid research experience at the international level and a strong publication record in indexed international research journals.
  • Previous industry experience is a must (working with industry or collaborating with industrial partners at fermentation design and/or optimization), and teaching experience at the academic level will be considered a plus.

We expect that you are an efficient team worker, have good communication skills, and have a critical approach to the formulation and testing of hypotheses. Also, a good sense of humour will be appreciated.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position is offered on a permanent basis.

Expecting starting date 1st of July 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.
