The Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine at Technical University of Denmark–DTU invites applications for a position as Professor in Protease Systems Biology. The position will be placed in the Section of Protein Science and Biotherapeutics with about 100 staff members.

The Section performs high-impact research and innovation aiming at harnessing the biotechnological, diagnostic, and therapeutic potential of proteins with a particular focus on immunology, antibody research, cutting-edge proteome technologies, phage display, mammalian cell technology, glycoengineering, and high-throughput screening and diagnostics. The Section also teaches BSc and MSc students in biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and immunology and has extensive international and national collaborations with top academic institutions as well as industrial and clinical partners.

We are looking for a professor working in protease biology with a specific focus on protein-based systems biology approaches to understand proteases as integrated signaling molecules and functional proteome modulators in complex tissue responses and their disturbance in disease.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You are expected to direct an internationally competitive research group focusing on the complex activities of proteases and their bioactive functions in health and disease. It is desired that a systems biology approach is followed, developing and utilising state-of-the-art proteome analytics that exploit the Department’s unique capabilities in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. In addition, the research programme should integrate aspects of data analytics and intelligent computational approaches in predictive interpretation of experimental datasets.

The research activities are expected to link to other relevant engineering areas in the department, and you are expected to engage in collaborative projects with groups in the department and relevant DTU departments (e.g. DTU Health, DTU Chemistry, DTU Food, DTU Biosustain). The aim will be to complement existing competences at DTU and create synergies with state-of-the-art methodologies for understanding proteases as bioactive signalling proteins in cells and tissues, thereby advancing existing research agendas and creating new ones.

You should have obtained well-documented international recognition within the above-mentioned research theme, raised grants and mentored young researchers. You should also be able to document teaching experience at all university levels (BSc, MSc, and PhD) in one or more areas within protein science, protease biology and proteomics. It is also an advantage if you have strong connections with international leading researchers at forefront institutions and is well integrated into the research community as documented, e.g., by leading functions in relevant scientific societies. Ideally, you have demonstrated significant leadership skills and the ability to design, shape and drive forward strategic themes at a high-level academic institution.

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
